I’ve been down and out the last few weeks, but I am now coming up for air. I had the honor of being the keynote closing speaker at the Global Breast Cancer Conference 2011 in Seoul, Korea. It was a magnificent experience. There are only a few things I like more than hardcore research. Laughing is one. The second is amazing presentations from researchers and doctors from all over the world. More about that later.

My HealthySELF: How TV Producer Noreen Fraser Fought Back Against Breast Cancer

Breast cancer is one of women’s biggest fears. But Noreen Fraser’s story proves that even the scariest nightmare can lead to amazing success.

Fraser, a television producer (of Entertainment Tonight, for one!), had been religious about mammograms, but one day in 2001, the then 47-year-old found a lump somewhere between her breast and her shoulder — just above the invisible line where the mammogram’s imaging stops. She was sure it was nothing, but she decided to be safe and have it checked out, and it turned out to be breast cancer. Fraser then had a lumpectomy and radiation.

I remember when my first child was born. The doctors didn’t even let you near your wife as she gave birth. We missed it all. But today it’s totally reversed. Now we do everything from sharing the pregnancy test, to Lamaze class, to helping your wife through the birth. Remember that one word you shouted a million times? “PUSH!” And that once in a lifetime experience – watching your child pop out.

We at the Noreen Fraser Foundation are honored to be partnering with LIFETIME as a member of the FIVE Coalition as the network enters its 17th year of supporting National Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October. The FIVE Coalition is presented in conjunction with FIVE, a star-studded Original Movie directed by Jennifer Aniston, Patty Jenkins, Alicia Keys, Demi Moore and Penelope Spheeris. FIVE takes a bold, honest and irreverent look at breast cancer told through the personal stories of five women.

The FIVE Coalition is a network of organizations providing ways for all to take action in the fight against breast cancer, and the Noreen Fraser Foundation is pleased to stand with six other top nonprofits to create an unparalleled system of support and resources for breast cancer survivors, patients, advocates and their friends and families.

Visit MyLifetime.com for more details and the air schedule for FIVE!
